Cheap Eats

I'm loving all the money I've been saving thanks to my new diet. During the weekdays, I eat a breakfast at the bank job that costs $4. For lunch I have the lunch special that costs $5. For dinner, I simply have a snack, like trail mix or something that ends up costing me a couple of dollars. So my weekdays are set. My weekends, however, are a different story.

It's very difficult to find cheap food that's healthy. When I was spending $40 a day on food, I didn't mind it because it was all good for me. Broiled salmon, egg whites, chicken caesar salad, protein bars, chicken souvlaki... it was expensive but healthy. Now that I'm looking for cheap foods, it's almost impossible to find anything healthy. It's either high in sodium or contains too many calories or whatever. Even the trail mix I buy has M&Ms and Hershey kisses in them!

The one thing that could fill me up was a massive 14" turkey sub from a local supermarket. It only costs $7.49 and it satisfies my appetite for at least 7 hours. The problem is that my stomach doesn't agree with it. For the last two weekends, I would have to go to the bathroom three or four times after eating it. I can't put my body through that again, so I'll have to find something else.

Tomorrow I'll have some work to do. After going to Empower to get my second secured credit card, I'm going to hit all the local supermarkets to find cheap healthy foods. First, I have to find trail mix that doesn't have chocolates in it. Fruits and nuts is all I want. After that, I have to find microwaveable dinners with no preservatives that are healthy and taste good.

Lean Cuisine has a good selection, but they put too much sauce on their foods. I also want to try those bagged microwaveable meals that steam the food. P90X taught me what foods to eat that I can enjoy, but I need the poor man's equivalent. The cheap eats are out there, I just have to find them.

  1. For trail mix, make that stuff yourself!!
I find the "good" grocery stores with bulk nuts, seeds, and dried fruits. Forget all that candy coated business. :P

My favorite combos usually include pumpkin seeds, cashews, almond, golden raisins, and cranberries. We also do regular raisins, walnuts, and pecans. All of those usually don't have major preservatives, if any. 100% food, yep, food!
