For the last three days I’ve had to walk to the bank job due to my car being fixed up. The car was finished Monday night but they called me the following morning and said that they had a problem starting the car up. When they replaced the head gasket, they had to put the engine back together and messed up the timing of some shit. So I’ve been without a vehicle since then.
I really don’t like the idea of paying car insurance so that I can walk to work every day. Walking to work sucks, especially since the only way to get to work is to walk through the bad neighborhood. Butterscotch Street is the fastest route to the bank job, and it also happens to be one of the worst streets in Smalltown. Everyday there are reports of stabbings and robberies on Butterscotch. Close to half of the properties on that street are for sale due to the high crime and the quality of tenants one can expect. One can correctly assume that walking down Butterscotch Street in a fucking suit and tie while carrying what is clearly a laptop bag at six in the morning isn’t exactly the safest scenario. I would have taken a taxi but they don’t start operating until 7am, this being one of the many reasons why I miss Brooklyn.
Not having a vehicle also forced me to miss working at the shipping depot last night, the first time I’ve ever had to call off. The mechanic shop, Monro Brakes, agreed that I should be compensated for the work missed, but I also want them to pay for the taxi rides I’ve had to take from the bank job to home. If they do this, that would make up for everything. Right now I’m not putting any pressure on them. Not having to go to the shipping depot on Tuesday to deal with Annabel was a wonderful delight, and getting paid for it was the cherry on top. I’m beginning to enjoy turning disadvantages into advantages! I can do this for a couple more days, but they had better have it ready by Friday (they just called me and said the Jimmy is ready). Breaking the continuity of working at the shipping depot is very dangerous for a creature of habit such as me, as it might make me lazy or call off work more often—and that’s the last thing I need.
